How it works & glossary
Where the points come fromEach card splits a player's points four ways, and each split adds back up to his box-score points: shot zones + free throws, catch-and-shoot vs. pull-up vs. everything else + free throws (NBA tracking), assisted vs. unassisted 2s and 3s + free throws, or first vs. second chance (second chance = after an offensive rebound). The court is always the zone split; its labels are the share of his points and the points per 100 possessions from each zone.
Against the leagueFor every zone: volume (attempts), accuracy (FG% or FT%) and points from that zone, with a percentile among players over the minutes cutoff. The small number after each value is the percentile (50 = median; blue is low, orange is high). Accuracy needs a minimum number of attempts to get a percentile.
What-if labMove one slider and everything else stays fixed. It works on shot zones or, with that split picked, on catch-and-shoot / pull-up / everything else. Change one, hold the rest adds or removes shots. Keep total shots moves shots between zones instead, so taking more threes means fewer of everything else. The point is how much each piece moves the total, not a prediction: real players can't change one thing in isolation.
SeedsEarly in a season the samples are tiny. Seed accuracy from loads the player's percentages from any earlier season, his career, or the league average into the lab, so you can see what this year's shot diet scores at those percentages. Tick seed volume too to load that season's shot diet as well.
DefinitionsZones are pbpstats': at rim (within ~4 ft), short mid-range (~4–14 ft), long mid-range (14 ft to the line), corner 3, above-break 3 (includes heaves). Possessions are the player's offensive possessions. TS% = PTS / (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)). Points are box-score PTS.
Dataplayer_sheets modern.parquet / modern_ps.parquet (pbpstats + NBA totals and tracking, 2013-14 on); shot locations from shot_data, refreshed by the daily scrape. A handful of player-seasons don't add up exactly; the gap shows as Unattributed.
At rim
Shots within about 4 feet of the basket (pbpstats zone).
Short mid-range
Two-point shots from about 4 to 14 feet.
Long mid-range
Two-point shots from 14 feet out to the three-point line.
Corner 3
Threes from either corner, below the break in the line.
Above-break 3
Every other three, heaves included (so the points still add up).
Catch-and-shoot
NBA tracking: a jump shot taken after a pass with no dribble before it. Points are field-goal points only.
Pull-up
NBA tracking: a jump shot taken after one or more dribbles. Never overlaps catch-and-shoot.
Everything else
Field goals tracking calls neither: rim finishes, cuts, putbacks, post moves, floaters and so on. His FGA and field-goal points minus catch-and-shoot and pull-ups.
eFG%
(FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) / FGA, i.e. points per shot ÷ 2. Used for the shot-type split, where 2s and 3s mix.
Free throws
All free throws, including and-ones and technicals.
Volume (Att)
Attempts from a zone (FTA for free throws) per 100 or 75 of his offensive possessions, per game, or in total.
Accuracy (Acc.)
Makes / attempts in the zone. A percentile needs half an attempt per team game (3 at least).
Points (Pts)
Makes × 2 or 3 (free throws × 1) at the chosen rate. The zones plus free throws add up to box-score PTS.
Share
That piece's points / all his points.
Assisted / unassisted
Points on made 2s and 3s that were or weren't assisted, plus free-throw points (pbpstats).
First / second chance
Second chance = points on a possession after an offensive rebound, free throws included; first chance = everything else.
TS%
True shooting: PTS / (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)).
Percentile
Mid-rank percentile among players over the minutes cutoff in the same season and season type (50 = median).
Possessions
The player's offensive possessions (pbpstats OffPoss). Per 75 = per 100 × 0.75.
Unattributed
Points a split misses for a few player-seasons (0.6% of them, a few points each) because the sources disagree.
Seed
Loads another season's (or his career's, or the league's) accuracy into the lab. A zone keeps its actual % when the seed has fewer than 10 attempts there.
Shots (court dots)
Every field-goal attempt from the NBA shot chart (shot_data), filled = make, ring = miss. They match pbpstats' FGA to within a shot; the numbers on the page all come from pbpstats.
Career grid colour
His accuracy in a zone or shot type minus the league's that season (all players, attempt-weighted): orange above, blue below, full colour at ±8 points of FG% (±10 FT%).
His range
His lowest and highest accuracy in a zone across seasons with 25+ attempts there; this season counts once it is 20+ games old.
